Super Bowl Sunday and the Host of Angels and Fish!

As the Saints are marching on and the Colts are galloping to the finish line we hear the praise of Angels, the roar and humility of St. Paul and the depth of the sea giving witness to the power of God.

" Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of Hosts". This angelic cry of praise is seen and heard by Isaiah. The Church adopts this in her liturgy at Mass. Before the heavenly throne of the Eucharist here on earth we sing or say on our knees to God, SANCTUS or HOLY, three times prior to receiving the Eucharist.

St. Paul in Chapter 15 of his first letter to the Corinthians is a first century understanding of the Church's belief in eternal life. More importantly, he shows us for the first time an early example of TRADITION in the Church. "For I have handed over to you what I have received". The first sense or meaning of the word "Tradition" is given to us by Paul: it is the cry at Mass again "Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again." From the handing over of Christ's spirit on the cross to the handing over of the Apostolic preaching from community to community the world has come to know the name of Jesus and the faith of Christians.

Jesus in the gospel asks Peter and his companions to cast their nets deep into the sea. Pope John Paul II made this biblical scene of Jesus and Peter at sea casting nets and catching a boat load of fish famous at the beginning of the new Millienium. His message was clear: Christianity will continue to spread its wings to all if our faith is on Christ and not on our own failures or human will.

St. Paul reminded us of the power and primacy of grace, "but by the grace of God I am what I am,and his grace to me has not been ineffective." May all of us learn the meaning of these words.

Finally, the beginning of February is always a celebration of religious life in our Church. February 2nd, the feast of the Presentation, the CHURCH recalls the presentation of Jesus in the temple but also the gift of religious women and men around the world.

We give thanks for the commitment and consecration of the religious sisters of mercy who witness Christ to every young woman who enters our doors.
